To; All builders using bolt on necks,

It has come to our attention that there are quite a few of you who are gluing in your M&T joints on your bolt on necks. Please refrain from doing this. Not only is this completely unnecessary, it negates the only main virtue of bolt on construction (necks that can be reset quickly and easily). This problem is compounded by the fact that most have never given proper consideration to headspacing the joint properly to allow for removal of one fret and the injection of steam to soften the glue. If you wish to glue your necks please learn to fashion and fit a proper dovetail, otherwise just bolt it on.

Thank you, The repair dept.

Yup. Like tightening up the lug nuts on your wheels, then welding them all in place just to be sure.

Doesn't Martin glue their, IMO, oddball single screw version of a bolt on?

Maybe the bolt is acting as a clamp for the glueup so they can just move em on down the assembly line?

This became more difficult when I switched over to Aluminum wheels, but with the right equipment and a bunch of practice I finally got it!

RE: Glueing bolt on necks.
You may or may not be pleased to know that this station does not use ANY glue when bolting on a neck. None on the mortise and tenon and none on the fingerboard extension. Awaiting further instruction.

If I understand it Martin uses one bolt as a clamp and leave it in rather than removing the bolt/clamp.
This station uses 2 bolts no glue, we have used glue on the finger board extensions.
We will discontinue this practice as directed.

I don't get it.

Surely if bolted on is good, bolted and glued must be better?

You forgot the smiley at the end , Ed.

Without it, some people might think you are being serious ...

Threaded inserts?

BTW, what are those threaded inserts that would go into the tenon transverse-wise, with a threaded hole in the side?

We here in this factory will never use glue for the neck joint except for actual dovetail joints.
And we don't do dovetail joints.

Mike,
I think they are called barrel nuts!

Thanks Robbie!! That's it. Thought they were externally threaded. Wayne, I thought that too. Search McMaster for barrel nuts. Nothing like the concept.

Sometimes I glue the strings to the saddle. Just to be sure they stay in place.....

I hope you are using HHG for this because it is obviously superior for tone in string to saddle joints. I have a slightly different approach. I glue in my bridge pins to keep the strings on at the bridge. I weld them onto the tuner posts but I'm sure that is what everyone does. I do go the extra mile and weld the gears once I get it tuned to pitch that way I never have to mess with tuning again! bliss

Post subject:  Re: Bolt on neck memo

I've eschewed the mechanical weld of tuned strings for liquid nails. Occasionally, I have found that the tuning drifts. So it's nice knowing that solvents and a heat gun can help me adjust when guitars come back for work.

In a related note I had a customer bring in a guitar for a string change. Turns out his bridge pins were a little loose, so he had glued them in.........
